Catching up--Maia's ruminations about adoption

The last six months at work have been awful. And I've been sick. Pneumonia and other things.

But I want to record some things Maia has said in the last 8 weeks or so about adoption.

This one morning at the kitchen sink:
Why do I have two Mommies?
You have me, and you have the Mommy who gave birth to you, Kristina said. Maia didn't take it further.

Some weeks after that, Kristina and I are lying with Maia in her bed. She likes us to lie beside her until she falls asleep.

I don't like Kazakhstan, she says. This was apropos of nothing--just out of the blue. I was adopted. I want to stay here. Because I like my Daddy. My Daddy is nice and sweet. And I like my Mommy. My Mommy is nice and sweet.

We will always be together, I told her.

Then a few weeks after that--we're at the breakfast table.

I don't want to come out of some other woman's belly, she says. I want to come out of your belly. Because you're my Mommy.

And then Kristina held her in her lap for awhile.
